• Doniphan, Mo. - Funeral services will be held Friday for a 36-year-old Poplar Bluff man who was killed in a shooting incident at Doniphan early Saturday morning. A visitation and memorial service will be held Friday evening, Sept. 5 for Manuel G. Williams, of Poplar Bluff, and formerly of Grandin, will bet the Edwards Funeral Home in Doniphan. Charged with first degree murder in the incident is Michael L. Futrell, 56, of Doniphan. Futrell is additionally charged with armed criminal action and unlawful use of a loaded firearm, also both felony charges. The range of punishment for the first degree murder charge, if convicted, is death or imprisonment for life without eligibility for probation or parole. From the affidavit for

  • New Madrid, Mo. - Officials who represent the region's largest employer today announced layoffs that will affect 125 to 200 area workers. Noranda President and Chief Executive Officer Layle K. "Kip" Smith said job cuts are related directly to a decision by the Missouri Public Service Commission (PSC) to deny competitive power rates to the New Madrid smelter. Layoffs are expected to come in phases during the next six months, Smith told a crowd of employees, dignitaries and press. Those cuts will reach across all sectors of the company's staff, including both administrative and plant personnel, he said.   • The Three Rivers College Patrons of the Arts Society has revealed the schedule for its upcoming 2014-15 season, which will include the return of Russian ballet, a Bee Gees tribute concert, Chinese acrobats, musical political satire, and three children's shows. All shows will be performed at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center on the Three Rivers campus in Poplar Bluff. Because of the support of donors to the Patrons of the Arts Society, ticket price for each main show will be $10, and ticket prices for the children's shows in Poplar Bluff will remain $5.
