• Three Rivers College will hold a ceremony to honor Coach Gene Bess for achieving 1,200 lifetime wins as coach of the Raiders basketball team on Saturday, February 7, in the Bess Activity Center on the college’s campus in Poplar Bluff, following the Raiders game against State Fair Community College. The game begins at 7 p.m. All interested media outlets are invited to attend. The ceremony will include a presentation of the game ball from Coach Bess’ historic 1,200th win. There will also be presentations from Three Rivers College, the Three Rivers Booster Club, and distinguished guests such as State Senator Doug Libla and State Representative Steve Cookson.   • Three Rivers College has released its Dean’s List for the Fall 2014 semester. The honor is awarded to students taking 12 or more credit hours in a semester, who achieve a G.P.A. of 3.5 or above. Dean’s List honors are also used at graduation to help determine eligibility for honors or highest honors.   • The American Red Cross-Southeast Missouri Chapter responded to a fire in the 800th block of D Street in Poplar Bluff on Sunday.   • As I set here writing my column, it occurs to me this month is nearly over.  When everyone reads this, January is history.  Can spring be very far away?  Yes, spring could be quite a distance away. The jonquils have started breaking their way through the cover of leaves and grass.  The snow crocus hasn’t made an appearance yet and snow could be in the forest for the coming week.  So far our snows have been the kind I like, just enough to cover the ground and make driving a little treacherous on some roads and highways and most of it melted away in short order.
