• KENNETT, Mo. - The Kennett City Council, Tuesday, discussed a number of issues and inked a deal with NewWave Communications to provide telephone service to the city. Kennett Police Department Chief Johnny Dennis approached the council with the proposal citing a net savings to the city of close to $10,000 annually. The 60-month contract costs the city approximately $36,600 plus taxes per year opposed to a bill of approximately $45,000 last year, Dennis said. The communications company will use a portion of Kennett's City Light, Gas and Water infrastructure to provide telephone service, which includes backup capabilities in case of disaster or emergencies, the chief added.   • The City of Poplar Bluff is home to one of the 3000 reported disc golf courses in the U.S. Clark Allen, director of the Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation Department says the 9-hole disc golf course has been in place at Hendrickson Park for about a year now. Set on an 8-acre plot of land, it joins a butterfly garden, playground equipment and shelters as features of the park. The idea came about from local fans of the game, and the course was largely built by volunteers. Use of the park and the disc golf course is free to the public, and it has turned out to be a great addition not just for the players who regularly use it,

At a little after 10am, Robert & Robin Whelan and Randy Rahlman and the City of Poplar Bluff, represented by Mayor Angela Pearson, closed on the property at the corner of Oak Grove Road and N Westwood Blvd. The Whelans received $850,000 for the property, attorney's fee's and moving expense.   • According to the City of Poplar Bluff, a public hearing will be held on Monday, April 18 at 6:45pm to discuss: The City Council of the City of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, will conduct a Public Hearing to receive citizens input relative to the property tax rates proposed to be set by the City Council of the City of Poplar Bluff, a political subdivision. The Tax Rate shall be set to produce the revenues, which the budget for the fiscal year beginning January 1, 2015, show to be required from the property tax rate.   • SEMO TIMES has learned that Gov. Nixon is set to appoint Chris Michel next week to finish out the remainder of the term of Butler County Collector due to the passing of the current Collector, Brenda Fox. SEMO TIMES contacted Michel and asked about the appointment, he had no comment. That is not necessarily uncommon for an appointee before it is made official. Michel did respond when asked about the upcoming November election, he was recently nominated by the Democratic Convention to be on the ballot for the upcoming election. Michel said he was excited about the campaign. He already has a campaign website.
