The Poplar Bluff High School Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps competed against five schools, from as far as Arkansas and Tennessee, winning the physical fitness challenge, plus placing third in the drill and ceremony events, at a drill competition held last month in E.T. Peter’s Gym.
Several educators from Poplar Bluff Schools were selected to present on topics related to the district’s one-to-one laptop initiative during the annual Midwest Education Technology conference held Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 10-11, in St. Charles. With over 2,000 participants, METC is the largest technology conference in the Midwest region. There were only 175 conference proposals accepted this year, including presentations by Junior High teachers Mike Berry, Jenn Nicolini, Marcia Priest and Josh Wesemann. R-I technology facilitators Valerie Ivy and Candace Warren also led workshops.
On Wednesday, Feb. 4, in E.T. Peters Gym, Ozark Federal Credit Union hosted a Reality Fair, its third budget-planning event involving Poplar Bluff Schools, with the participation of 280 high school seniors along with 38 local businesses and organizations. Students each received a unique packet stating their occupation, salary, debt history, marital status and whether or not they had children. Then they were assigned to visit with real industry professionals to purchase necessities such as a mock house, transportation, furniture, clothing and food. The object was to attempt to keep within budget in a workbook. by Logan Harding Westwood Baptist Academy had their Homecoming on Friday night. Trey Graham and Summer Ward were named the Homecoming King and Queen. Graham later led the Eagles to a win in their final home game of the season.
Ozark Federal Credit Union made a $100 donation to the Poplar Bluff High School Competition Cheer Squad toward their trip to compete over the weekend in the Universal Cheerleader Association’s National High School Cheerleading Championship in Florida. The cheerleaders ended up placing eighth out of 14 teams in the preliminary round of the Large Varsity Division II, missing out by a single place for advancement to the semi-finals.
