DSL

Digital Subscriber Line. Uses the same wire as your voice phone line to provide an “always on” high-speed connection. You must have an AT&T phone line to qualify for our DSL service.

Equipment Needed

A DSL modem and filter are required for basic use. Additionally, a router is required for business use. You may also need an Ethernet card if your computer doesn’t already have one.

Speeds

The connection speed is up to 1.5mbps downstream and 128kbps upstream depending on location. In addition, a DSL connection allows for one line to carry both voice and data signals, and for the data part of the line to be continuously connected, so you can talk on your phone line at the same time you’re surfing the Internet.

Requirements

You must be an ATT or Windstream telephone customer (not available in all areas) and be within 16,000ft from their central office or live in a neighborhood where a DSL Gateway has been installed. (Please note that the measurement from the central office to the customer premise is the length of the telephone line facility, not street miles or air miles.)

Additionally, they must have a telephone line qualified to carry the DSL signal. The line could not have limiting conditions such as bridge taps and load coils, which are used as part of the telephone company infrastructure to provide better voice service. Also, the line can not pass through any sort of PBX or other type of electronic equipment. These devices interfere with the DSL signal. The line must be an ordinary analog or POTS line. When a customer’s line has these conditions, the line is not qualified to carry the DSL signal. Approximately 60 – 65% of customers serviced by each central office will qualify for the service.
