Three Rivers Literary Magazine Receives National Honors
“Confluence,” the annual literary journal of Three Rivers College, has received three awards from the American Scholastic Press Association for its 2014 issue. The journal, which is put together by the college’s Languages department, contains poetry, short fiction, and essays written by Three Rivers’ students, faculty, and staff.
“We’re extremely proud to receive these awards, especially considering the level of competition,” said Gregory Snell, an Instructor of English at the college and one of Confluence’s coordinators. “We put a lot of work into ‘Confluence’ every year, and it’s rewarding to see it get the attention it deserves.”
“Confluence” was one of five university, community college, and high school literary magazines to receive “First Place with Merit.” The award is given for excellence in design, layout, content, and editing. The journal also received the Outstanding Theme award for its “Doctor Who” theme, as well as the Most Outstanding College Literary Magazine award.
Content for “Confluence” is drawn from poetry, short stories, and essays submitted by the college’s students, faculty and staff, which are selected for publication by a peer review committee. The journal is then designed and laid out by Mark Sanders, Chair of the Languages department, in keeping with that year’s theme.
“Confluence” is distributed for free each year at Three Rivers’ open mic poetry night. This year’s event will be held on Tuesday, April 21, at 6 p.m. in the Academic Resource Commons building on the college’s Poplar Bluff campus. Admission is free, and all are welcome to attend.
