The City of Poplar Bluff is home to one of the 3000 reported disc golf courses in the U.S. Clark Allen, director of the Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation Department says the 9-hole disc golf course has been in place at Hendrickson Park for about a year now. Set on an 8-acre plot of land, it joins a butterfly garden, playground equipment and shelters as features of the park. The idea came about from local fans of the game, and the course was largely built by volunteers. More than $25K Raised During Annual Mule Skinner The Poplar Bluff Mules Booster Club generated around $26,000—100 percent of which will support Poplar Bluff R-I’s athletic programs—during the sixth annual Mule Skinner Golf Tournament held on Friday, Aug. 8, at Westwood Hills Country Club. Student ambassadors consisting of nearly 60 upperclassman led Freshman Orientation on Thursday, Aug. 7, at Poplar Bluff High School, holding competitions in E.T. On 08-19-14 at approximately 1:50 am, Officers with the Poplar Bluff Police Department received information that Christopher Gainwell, a subject with several outstanding felony warrants (including charges stemming from a shooting incident reported August 10th), was hiding at a residence in the 1200 block of Bradley st. Officers responded to the residence, and knocked at the front door.  As they did, Gainwell attempted to flee the residence through the back door.  Doing so, Gainwell encountered an Officer stationed at the rear of the residence; and he tried to retreat back into the residence.  Gainwell was taken to the ground and, after a brief struggle, taken into custody. Poplar Bluff, Mo. - The Friends of the NRA held their 22nd Annual Fundraising Banquet Saturday at Poplar Bluff's Black River Coliseum. Albert Boeving, one of the organizers of the event, noted that this year's event set a record in terms of the net amount raised per attendee. “Our attendance was down slightly because of many competing events going on this weekend,” said Boeving. “But we actually set a record with the amount of money raised per attendee.” The event netted over $75,000 and attracted about 550 attendees. The Poplar Bluff City Council welcomed new City Manager Heath Kaplan at the conclusion of his first day on the job, and also took care of a number of pieces of city business Monday evening. As it happened, his first day on the job was also Kaplan's birthday. After being serenaded with a rendition of “Happy Birthday” by the council members and crowd at the meeting, Kaplan, thanked the citizens of Poplar Bluff for his warm reception.
