  • Cheri Kallner is an unusual 19-year old. She realizes she is not typical in the least. Yes…she’s a preacher’s kid, the daughter of Sean Kallner who directs the Springhill School of Hope. But she is much more. She is actually a published author.   • Well, my rampant abroad-ness has been continued yet another week, and so brings another action-packed adventure from just outside the Heartland, kind of. I spent the last three days on the “big water”, which of course is Kentucky Lake. Stretching 184 miles and covering 160,000 acres, Kentucky Lake is the largest manmade lake in the Eastern United States. The Tennessee River runs through the lake and is controlled at the 1-mile-long Kentucky Dam.   • Three Rivers College will hold its bi-annual mass casualty training event on Tuesday, May 5. The training helps prepare students in participating programs be prepared for a mass casualty emergency such as a natural disaster or terrorist attack, and tests the college’s emergency response plans. The training event will be held at the college’s Nursing and Allied Health building on Pine Street in Poplar Bluff. Students from several fields of study will participate in the training, including three classes of nursing students, EMT students, and Paramedic students. The training will also receive support from Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center, Black River Medical Center, local ambulance services, law enforcement agencies, and fire departments.     Three Rivers College will spotlight its career-technical programs at the Career/Tech Information Fair from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, at the Bess Activity Center on Three Rivers’ Poplar Bluff Campus. “In today’s employment market, many of the high-demand, high-paying jobs require career or technical training rather than a four-year degree,” said Dr. Brenda Russell, Dean of Career Education and Workforce Development at Three Rivers. “At Three Rivers we offer that training through certificate and associate of applied science degree programs in a variety of career and technical fields.” At the Career/Tech Information Fair, attendees can talk to representatives of Three Rivers’ career and technical programs about the benefits and career opportunities offered at Three Rivers.   • Opening morning of the spring firearms turkey season turned out to be a real bummer. I knew where everything I needed was located in the house and as I was getting ready, some of the items were not where they were supposed to be. I found all the clothing that I needed and got dressed and them the searching began. I knew where the shotguns were stored and got out my 12-Ga. that I intended to use. I had a shell vest with the ammunition I needed hanging on the front bedroom door. When I checked to make sure that I had the right vest, imagine my surprise to find 20-Ga. Shells in the vest.
