  • DEXTER - On 12-17-14 at 10:14 PM Dexter PD and the Stoddard County Sheriff's Department responded to Timber Creek Subdivision in reference to a male subject that discharged a firearm inside his residence.  Officer's met with the suspect's family members outside the residence and were told the suspect had fired two shots in a bedroom window.  Officers were told family members had collected all the firearms inside the residence prior to law enforcement arrival and the suspect was still inside the residence. Officers located the suspect inside his bedroom sitting on a bed with a deer rifle laying across his legs.  The suspect pointed the rifle at the Officers and they immediately took cover.  For approximately 6 minutes Officers negotiated

Edward Gargas of the Missouri Army National Guard. After entrance music performed by the Bloomfield High School Band; Director's comments by SMSgt. USAF (ret.) Kenneth G. Swearengin; the Invocation offered by First General Baptist Church Pastor Ronnie Stevens; and the Pledge of Allegiance led by Elmer Wilson, the band performed the "Star Spangled Banner."   • Key political positions were dominated by incumbent Republicans Tuesday when Stoddard Countians went to the polls. Voters re-elected incumbent 8th Dist. U.S. Rep.Jason Smith (R) to another term in Congress. He rolled past Democratic candidate Barbara Stocker by a convincing 5,157 to 1,411 vote. Incumbent state Auditor Tom Schweich (R) continues to serve in that capacity as he has since his election in 2010. Schweich defeated Democrat Sean O'Toole by a landslide tally of 5,407 votes to O'Toole's 768 votes cast. Dist. 151 state Rep. Tila Hubrecht (R), who was elected to the seat in a past special election, emerged victorious overwhelmingly against her Democratic challenger Ryan Holder.   • In its 87th year, the Stoddard County Fair will officially begin with a parade through downtown Dexter at 5:30pm on Tuesday, Sept. 16. (Exhibit entries will be accepted on the 14th and 15th) The winner of 2013's Band Competition, The Puxico Rhythm Steppers, will be the lead band for this year's parade. Immediately after the parade in Arena A there will be youth games and chicken catching; while Arena B will host the Queen's Contest.   • BLOOMFIELD - An accused killer was granted a change of venue recently from Stoddard County and will be tried for first-degree murder in Butler County, court records indicate. Allen Dale "Smurf" McCoy, 40, of 109 Joyce, Bernie was implicated along with his wife Angela "Angie" McCoy, 43, in the 2010 stabbing death of then 67-year-old Aubrey Lee Finch of Bernie. Angela McCoy, through her Jefferson City attorney, Heather Lee Vodnansky, accepted a plea agreement in April 2013 offered by Stoddard County Prosecuting Attorney Russ Oliver and will serve 85 percent of a 20-year sentence for second-degree murder, court records state.
