  • It seems nearly impossible to fathom that someone as brilliant and funny as Robin Williams could be so tortured emotionally that he takes himself out of the human race. Yet, last week, one by one, each of us across the whole globe, fixed our attention on the sad news of this beloved actor’s suicide. Sometimes, a blip of news in the vast sea of information we are bombarded with daily, seems to slap us so hard in the face that we can almost hear the collective groan rippling through space and time. Then we all try our best to reckon with reality. And what a devastating reality Robin Williams’ death reveals - that someone who, by his very nature, brought

  • Going through more than 60 years of pictures taken at different times and locations produces quite a few memories of the life and times of this writer. One picture shows the bathroom or house at Redman Creek the last time the lake got high enough to go over the overflow and wash out Route T for the third time. With all the rains we have had this spring and summer, thoughts of the lake again getting that high come to mind. Back in the "Good "Ole Days" when I carried papers for the Daily American Republic, the Saturday edition went to press at noon and as soon as I could get the papers delivered and get home, the crew that

  • Mother Nature has finally given some indication that the weather patterns are returning to their normal routines and spring is here.  My memory is still good but I have vague recollections of hunting Easter Eggs in the snow one year when I was a little kid. I had a couple of ideas about what to write about but an old Missouri Conservation magazine changed those thoughts to something more urgent.  People have been asking me when to put out hummingbird feeders. My wife is anxiously waiting another week and then the first feeder will go out with a small amount of food for the “scouts” that will appear ahead of the migration of hummers that surely will come sometime early

  • Duck hunting at Green Oaks east of Fisk, south of Highway 60 was very popular as the timber flooded just about every fall and the ducks used the area for feeding.   Mallards in particular used the areas under the oak trees for their food.  That area now is farmland but the memories about hunting remain as fresh as if they just happened. One trip over there, Dad came upon a trapper who was looking for a trap he had set on a log in that area and couldn’t locate the log where he’d made the set. Dad had seen the set and also the mink that was in the trap.  The trapper had a tow-sack with some coon he had
