Earlier this month the Ozark Federal Credit Union purchased 150 Neverland-themed T-shirts for the Poplar Bluff High School Sho-Me Band to be worn this season. Sho-Me Band Booster Club President Shelly Batton initially reached out to credit union officials, who said they were more than happy to oblige. Wearing their new gray shirts, for the most part, the Sho-Me Band take a moment during practice Friday, Aug. 21, to formally thank Ozark Federal Credit Union staff members (standing, front left): Chad Wolfram, vice president of lending; Davine Conover, business development specialist; Kirk Mondy, president; and Katrina Hopson, operations manager.
The Poplar Bluff High School Academic Team had a strong showing during ACE Quizbowl camp last month at Lincoln College in Illinois. Jackson Rideout, the PBHS senior captain, took first place in the history tournament; sophomore Alyssa Cook, the JV captain, won second in a team contest; and Christian Cmehil-Warn, a senior starter, consistently qualified to compete with the top performing students from multiple states. PBHS has been making its mark in Academic Competition Enterprises-sponsored camps for several years, according to their coach, science teacher Gail Karlish. The Academic Team ended the 2014/15 season with a 30-14 Scholar Bowl record, the Missouri State High School Activity Association has reported.
More than 75 supporters celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony for Poplar Bluff School’ new high school, the impetus of the district buildings plan, on Thursday, June 4, at the present site of the 5th & 6th Grade Center. In attendance were state and city officials, business leaders, project managers, R-I administrators, the School Board of Education and members of the various committees established beginning in 2010 in order to help reach this major milestone, including: the Long-Range Planning Committee, the Citizens’ Advisory Council and the Committee for our Kids’ Future. The current educational facility will receive a 135,000-square-foot addition featuring a new science wing, media center and centrally located commons area. The Poplar Bluff High School Teenage Republicans, a student club that was reinstated this year by senior Ben Soeter, toured the state Capitol on Monday and Tuesday, March 16-17, visiting with an intensive line-up of government officials. Highlights of the Jefferson City trip, according to club president Soeter, included being welcomed during a Congress session by Sen. Doug Libla of Poplar Bluff and witnessing a spirited session on the House floor, which led to the eventual passage of HB 458 – anti-bullying legislation. “In government class, we talked about Missouri’s House and Senate, Supreme Court, et cetera,” Soeter said. “During the trip we actually got to witness everything we discussed.” Besides meeting the lieutenant governor, legislators, lobbyists, judges and other
The Poplar Bluff High School Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps competed against five schools, from as far as Arkansas and Tennessee, winning the physical fitness challenge, plus placing third in the drill and ceremony events, at a drill competition held last month in E.T. Peter’s Gym.
