  • It seems nearly impossible to fathom that someone as brilliant and funny as Robin Williams could be so tortured emotionally that he takes himself out of the human race. Yet, last week, one by one, each of us across the whole globe, fixed our attention on the sad news of this beloved actor’s suicide. Sometimes, a blip of news in the vast sea of information we are bombarded with daily, seems to slap us so hard in the face that we can almost hear the collective groan rippling through space and time. Then we all try our best to reckon with reality. And what a devastating reality Robin Williams’ death reveals - that someone who, by his very nature, brought

  • The Junior Beta Club of the Poplar Bluff 5th & 6th Grade Center recently donated more than 400 toys and over $1,200 to Project Christmas Promise, as the result of a toy and penny drive that ran from Nov.17-Dec. 12. • About 10 years ago, my family received a gift from a friend: a small book and three ornaments. The book described traditions from around the world involving ornaments at Christmas. Our family immediately fell in love with the story of the German families who hide a pickle in their tree and on Christmas morning the one who finds the pickle gets a special surprise from Santa. What we quickly found out is "finding the pickle" is much more fun than any prize. Before we ever got to Christmas morning, the kids had played hide-and-seek with the pickle multiple times each day. And thus, our new tradition began. My kids are now 13 and 16 and as we were trimming

  • Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all the outdoors-folk in our beautiful little piece of America! Jesus is the reason for the season, and there are blessings abound in our neck of the woods. Lord knows I love the thrill of fishing and hunting, and the beauty of the great outdoors, but without friends and family to share this awesome passion with, I doubt many of us would be near as adamant about it. So take a kid fishing or hunting, and thank the Lord for time spent in the serenity of God’s creation with the ones we love, because you never know what tomorrow will bring. Hopefully a lot of kids (and dads and grandpas) are receiving a ton

  • If you have kids ages 11 through 19, you probably have a problem come Christmas time. Your kids WANT to give a great present but they haven't saved up enough money to do anything but buy a $10 knick-knack. And on Christmas morning...well, the materialism of gifts somehow blows the "it's the thought that counts" up the chimney. Let's face it, even at age 10, your kids want to give you the same quality give you give them. That's not materialist, it's just human. My family started a tradition of doing Secret Santa among our immediate family. We go to the mall and everyone knows our preset dollar limit (for example $75). During the first few hours, everyone goes around the mall taking photos of

Hours for this year’s event are 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov.7, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8. Pelton said that a favorite feature of her event are her theme-decorated Christmas trees. “Most of our ornaments are hand-crafted from artisans from this area, and we have some from around the world,” she explained. Some of the themes included this year are the Religious Tree, the Peacock Tree, and
