  • It seems nearly impossible to fathom that someone as brilliant and funny as Robin Williams could be so tortured emotionally that he takes himself out of the human race. Yet, last week, one by one, each of us across the whole globe, fixed our attention on the sad news of this beloved actor’s suicide. Sometimes, a blip of news in the vast sea of information we are bombarded with daily, seems to slap us so hard in the face that we can almost hear the collective groan rippling through space and time. Then we all try our best to reckon with reality. And what a devastating reality Robin Williams’ death reveals - that someone who, by his very nature, brought

  • I have now officially found the best first date restaurant in Poplar Bluff. Where? Of course, you would ask that. Jim & Jerry’s Restaurant, Pub, and Cajun Food, located at 336 Vine Street, in downtown Poplar Bluff. Now, of course you want to know why I would select this particular venue as the best first date restaurant in Poplar Bluff. To understand my reasoning, you have to understand the subtle nuances of every single issue involving a first date. A first date is not merely a date. No...every single issue involving a first date is important because basically, it determines whether there will be a second date. Men often do not understand this. Even some women do not understand it.

  • It’s not every day that a country music legend pulls into town. But that will be the case on June 6 when country music legend Narvel Felts performs at Poplar Bluff’s Historic Rodgers Theatre. It won’t be the first time, though, notes Penny Cooley, manager of the theatre. “He has played at the Rodgers several times now, and it is always great because he has such a loyal fan base. They come from all over the country to come see him, and certainly from all over Missouri.” Felts is a country music legend, but he is also a regional home town guy. Felts was raised in Bernie and attended Bernie High School. As a matter of fact, he was “discovered”

  • Friday was a bit cloudy and dull. But my day brightened considerably when I met some friends at the Original Lemonade House Grill. There was a bit of a wait in line and a little bit of a wait to get my order, but it was all time well spent. At the Original Lemonade House Grill, the line becomes time for true social interaction. It’s much more entertaining than eating somewhere with a big screen television in front of you. Boyfriends are discussed, husbands are discussed, ex husbands are discussed. Then there is a chiming in from the guy’s side, lamenting all of the trouble with women. Overheard conversations are entertainment. Well, you get the picture. Just the chance to

  • “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land” Chronicles 7:14 That was the verse before a crowd of about 50 people who gathered Friday evening at Northpoint Nazarene Church. Pastor Greg Gilberto had called the Prayer Summit in hopes of beginning a healing process for the city of Poplar Bluff. “I have never done this before,” Gilberto told the gathering. “But I feel this is something we need to do.” Gilberto has been disturbed by what he described as a feeling of a “wet blanket” laying over
