  • Three Rivers College nursing students Walter Rommel of Broseley and Kathleen Soriano of Poplar Bluff have been awarded the Louise Shull Medler Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship awards both students funding to cover the cost of the NCLEX-RN licensing exam after the completion of their studies. The scholarship was endowed in memory of Louise Shull Medler, a Qulin native who worked as a nurse for over 20 years in the Poplar Bluff area. One of the original nurses for Kneibert Clinic, Ms. Medler also served as a staff trainer for the Department of Social Services. Funding for the scholarship was given by the Shull family and friends.   • Source: Poplar Bluff Schools The Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizens program and scholarship contest is accepting applications through December 1. One student will be selected as the school’s DAR Good Citizen. The winner will receive a pin, certificate, and wallet recognition card and may choose to enter the organization’s scholarship contest. Each state winner receives an award in the amount of at least $250 and a special state DAR Good Citizens pin and certificate.  Each of the eight national division (multi-state groups) winners will receive a cash award in the amount of $500.  Two national winners will be invited to Washington DC to attend Continental Congress and will be awarded $5,000 scholarships, inscribed silver bowls and certificates.   • Poplar Bluff High School senior Zain Siddiqui was awarded the $1,000 Michael D. Laseter Memorial Scholarship, which is limited to a senior planning to major in the medical field. Siddiqui, 18, has been accepted into the pre-med program at Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Laseter was a physician specializing in internal medicine at Kneibert Clinic for over 20 years. After retiring from medicine in 1994, he taught physiology at PBHS on a voluntary basis for five years. Since 2008, the memorial scholarship in his name has been awarded to a student each year.

  • Poplar Bluff High School senior Lydia Keller has been awarded $2,300 in scholarships for her achievements both in and outside of the classroom. Keller, 18, received the Mary Lynn Wolpers Scholarship, which was established in 2007 for graduating seniors. She also received the Poplar Bluff School Foundation Scholarship reserved for a past or present graduate planning to become a teacher. Keller will study early childhood education at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro.
