• The fourth time was the charm for River Blount, a home schooled sixth-grader from Annapolis who won the sixth annual Three Rivers College Southeast Missouri Regional Spelling Bee held Feb. 28. Blount correctly spelled "adjudicate" in the 12th round of the regional event to earn a trip to the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which will be held in Washington, D.C., May 24-29. “I studied really hard the last few weeks, just practicing and practicing,” Blount said. “I’m really excited about winning and about going to Washington.” Three Rivers began holding the Regional Spelling Bee in 2009 to provide area students with an official qualifying event for the national competition.   • Three Rivers College has released its Dean’s List for the Fall 2014 semester. The honor is awarded to students taking 12 or more credit hours in a semester, who achieve a G.P.A. of 3.5 or above. Dean’s List honors are also used at graduation to help determine eligibility for honors or highest honors.   • A total of 17 active members of the Poplar Bluff High School Future Farmers of America attended the annual Greenhand Motivational Conference on Wednesday, Jan. 7, at Three River College, during which students learned about opportunities within the national youth organization. Through interactive workshops and skits from state FFA officers, local members were encouraged to be positive role models, get involved, make sound choices and make a positive difference in their lives, school and community, according to a press release from the Missouri FFA Association.

  • The Three Rivers College Music Department will host the 24th annual Three Rivers College Jazz Band Festival on Feb. 12, 13 and 14 at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center on the Three Rivers’ Poplar Bluff campus. The festival includes free concerts at 7 p.m. each night, featuring junior high, high school and Three Rivers College jazz bands on Thursday, Feb. 12; Arkansas State University Jazz Ensemble on Friday, Feb. 13; and the 2015 All-District High School Jazz Band on Saturday, Feb. 14. Dr. Joel Vanderheyden will be guest clinician for the Festival and will direct the All-District Jazz Band. Vanderheyden is Associate Professor of Music and Director of Jazz at Jefferson College.   • Ag Expo 2015 is one of the largest farm trade shows in the region! It is scheduled for January 30 and 31 at the Black River Coliseum in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. This is the 29th year of Ag Expo, which is sponsored by Butler County University of Missouri Extension Council and the Ag Club of Three Rivers College. There will be 118 booths available to visit and learn first-hand about agriculture and its importance to the economy.  The expo will also feature outdoor exhibits. Ten thousand people attended last year’s event. Admission is $1 for adults; there will be free admission for college students and youth. The event will be held Friday, January 30 from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.
