The Federal Communications Commission today adopted a policy statement that outlines four principles to encourage broadband deployment and preserve and promote the open and interconnected nature of public Internet: (1) consumers are entitled to access the lawful Internet content of their choice; (2) consumers are entitled to run applications and services of their choice, subject to the needs of law enforcement; (3) consumers are entitled to connect their choice of legal devices that do not harm the network; and (4) consumers are entitled to competition among network providers, application and service providers, and content providers. A campaign encouraging people to enter a emergency contact number in their mobile phone's memory under the heading "ICE" (In Case of Emergency) is spreading rapidly as a particular consequence of terrorist attacks [Hat Tip: Deborah J. Martell]. But it's a good idea for other reasons, too. Originally established as a nation wide campaign in the UK, "ICE" allows paramedics or police to be able to quickly contact a designated relative or next of kin in an emergency situation. The idea is the brainchild of East Anglian Ambulance Service Paramedic Bob Brotchie and was launched in May of this year.
