SIKESTON — Dr. Sandra Stotsky, professor emerita in the Department of Education Reform at the University of Arkansas, will be speaking on the Common Core State Standards for education in Sikeston, Mo. The free event is open to the public. It will be held Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 7:00 p.m. at the Miner Convention Center, 2610 E. Malone Ave. Miner, MO. A question and answer period will follow the presentation. Poplar Bluff High School juniors and seniors were recently given the opportunity to participate in Preview Days during which students took a tour of Three Rivers College, received academic program overviews as well as information on federal aid. The PBHS counseling department—comprised of Susan Brown, Tamara Day, Tina Wilkins and Regina Williams—accompanied the students. In partnership with the community college, the counselors plan to host the visit annually.

Emergency medical technician Lauren Lady and paramedic David Ross of Butler County Emergency Medical Services visited Eugene Field Elementary School in an ambulance on Wednesday, Oct. 1, to discuss their profession as well as safety with second graders. On 10-09-14 at approximately 1244 hrs Officers with the Poplar Bluff Police Department responded to the 800 block of Park st in reference to a report of gunshots fired into an occupied residence.  An occupant of the residence identified Gregory Kammerer (32, of Poplar Bluff) and Kevin Busby (26, of Poplar Bluff) as possible suspects in the shooting. A short time later, Officer Shane Bates located Kammerer’s vehicle a few blocks from the scene, and tried to initiate a traffic stop; the driver refused to stop.  The driver accelerated, turning repeatedly on streets in the downtown area; and he lost control after ramming a patrol vehicle. WASHINGTON – Dubbed her "Claire on Campus" tour, U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill is launching a series of discussions at colleges and universities across Missouri next week to talk directly with students, educators, advocates, and law enforcement on ways to combat sexual violence on campuses. McCaskill will also use the events to collect feedback on her bipartisan legislation to protect and empower students, and strengthen accountability and transparency for institutions.
