Source: Poplar Bluff Schools The Missouri State Society Daughters of the American Revolution will be awarding the Nash Music Scholarship in the amount of $1,500 to a Missouri student in April 2016. Seniors in high school through juniors in college may apply. The student must be an accomplished musician pursuing a degree in music and have a GPA of at least 3.0. All original transcripts, letters of recommendations and other required documents must have a postmark by January 15, 2016, and be received by the state chairman in a single package. “Knock knock.” “Who’s there?” “Matthew.” “Matthew who?” “Math you can do – because you’re great at it!” That was the joke 9-year-old Cooper Jackson told his fourth grade opponents after winning the annual Math Counts championship on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at the Poplar Bluff Public Library. Cooper of Oak Grove won by answering 54 multiplication questions correctly in two minutes. His opponents—Keona Sample of Lake Road, Emily Elliott of Eugene Field and Molly Mooney of O’Neal—were not too far behind, according to facilitators. In order to advance to the competition, the students each competed in qualifying rounds at their respective elementary schools over the course of three weeks, making them all winners. Nov 10,The Poplar Bluff Mules Booster Club has named high school softball player Shelby Sievers and football player Steven Haley the October Athletes of the Month. Haley, a senior, is only seven tackles short of the school record with 131. His stats include 21 tackles for loss, two sacks, two forced fumbles and two interceptions. In the classroom, Haley maintains an 11.100 GPA, and scored a 31 on his ACTs. “He’s a great person and player,” said Mules Football coach Mark Barousse, “the kind of teammate you want to have.” Sophomore Sievers holds the record for hits in a single season with 50, runs batted in with 34, and extra base hits with 21. Nov 05,The Poplar Bluff High School AP physics class is competing regionally in a MoDOT-sponsored model bridge building contest for a potential $10,000 civil engineering scholarship to a heartland university. Students were supplied 15 pieces of balsa wood, a bottle of glue and some string, then given four weeks to create a bridge design of their choosing between 16-20 inches long and 2-9 inches wide, with the ability to hold at least 7 pounds. The resulting projects will be judged based on structural efficiency on Thursday, Nov. 19, in Cape Girardeau.
