Though there wasn’t a lot of fanfare, Poplar Bluff’s first public radio station, Black River Public Radio, made its on-air debut Friday, June 5. But, there will be a big splash on June 19, when the group hosts its second fundraiser to raise money for equipment and programming for the new station. “We are on-air, which is very exciting,” said Robert Smith, one of the organizers of the new public radio station. “We’re playing a variety of music, but this is just the beginning of what we will be offering the community.” The June 19 fundraising event will be held at Black River Gallery, and will feature live jazz music, great food, and perhaps most importantly, great company in the

More than 75 supporters celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony for Poplar Bluff School’ new high school, the impetus of the district buildings plan, on Thursday, June 4, at the present site of the 5th & 6th Grade Center. In attendance were state and city officials, business leaders, project managers, R-I administrators, the School Board of Education and members of the various committees established beginning in 2010 in order to help reach this major milestone, including: the Long-Range Planning Committee, the Citizens’ Advisory Council and the Committee for our Kids’ Future. The current educational facility will receive a 135,000-square-foot addition featuring a new science wing, media center and centrally located commons area. Poplar Bluff Junior and Senior High students were recently awarded bank cards for leading their respective classes in the Charlie Classic Reading challenge. In addition to earning the Charlie Classics scholarship, Ben Soeter of the PBHS Class of 2015 placed first as a senior, reading 25 books; outgoing junior Christian Cmehil-Warn placed first in his class with 21 books while classmate Nikkia Hickman placed second with 17 books; outgoing sophomore Jordan Cox placed first in his class with 20 books while classmate Shishanna Roberson placed second with 10 books; and outgoing freshman Kenneth Hadley placed first with 12 books. Registration deadline for the gardening summer day program at Butler County University of Missouri Extension is coming up soon! Summer programs provide a safe environment for youth ages 5-18 to spend summer learning about the world. Through gardening youth learn through hands-on activities. Youth will learn the basic concepts of gardening and will be able to garden their own plant, vegetable, or flower. This course will be held on June 8 from 1:00 pm– 4:00 pm.
