A total of 22 members of Poplar Bluff Schools’ staff, faculty and administration were honored during a retirement reception on Thursday, April 30, in the Administrative Building. Administrators reflected on the careers of the employees and presented them each a plaque as a small token of appreciation for their years of dedicated service to public education. Families, friends, co-workers and school board members were in attendance.

Three Rivers College will hold its bi-annual mass casualty training event on Tuesday, May 5. The training helps prepare students in participating programs be prepared for a mass casualty emergency such as a natural disaster or terrorist attack, and tests the college’s emergency response plans. The training event will be held at the college’s Nursing and Allied Health building on Pine Street in Poplar Bluff. Students from several fields of study will participate in the training, including three classes of nursing students, EMT students, and Paramedic students. The training will also receive support from Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center, Black River Medical Center, local ambulance services, law enforcement agencies, and fire departments. Poplar Bluff High School senior Zain Siddiqui was awarded the $1,000 Michael D. Laseter Memorial Scholarship, which is limited to a senior planning to major in the medical field. Siddiqui, 18, has been accepted into the pre-med program at Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Laseter was a physician specializing in internal medicine at Kneibert Clinic for over 20 years. After retiring from medicine in 1994, he taught physiology at PBHS on a voluntary basis for five years. Since 2008, the memorial scholarship in his name has been awarded to a student each year.
