• The Mules Booster Club has selected Poplar Bluff High School basketball star Joseph Eyler and swimming prodigy Taylor Norwood as Athletes of the Month for December. Norwood, a freshman, has made the state cut and holds the school record in the 200 individual medley and relay; 200 and 400 free relay; 200 and 500 freestyle; 100 backstroke; and the 100 butterfly. She also made the state cut in the 100 freestyle.   • Three Rivers College will hold a ceremony to honor Coach Gene Bess for achieving 1,200 lifetime wins as coach of the Raiders basketball team on Saturday, February 7, in the Bess Activity Center on the college’s campus in Poplar Bluff, following the Raiders game against State Fair Community College. The game begins at 7 p.m. All interested media outlets are invited to attend. The ceremony will include a presentation of the game ball from Coach Bess’ historic 1,200th win.   • Three Rivers College has released its Dean’s List for the Fall 2014 semester. The honor is awarded to students taking 12 or more credit hours in a semester, who achieve a G.P.A. of 3.5 or above.   • The Poplar Bluff Police Department is investigating a home invasion robbery and shooting which occurred at a residence in the 1600 block of Sanders st in Poplar Bluff on 2/1.  Based upon witness statements and evidence found at the scene, the suspects were apparently trying to steal a large quantity of marijuana. On 02-01-15 at approximately 4:49 pm, Officers with the Poplar Bluff Police Department were dispatched to the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center Emergency Room in reference to a patient being treated for a gunshot wound.   Christopher Gregory (27 years old, of the 1600 block of Sanders st Poplar Bluff) was later transferred to Barnes Hospital in St Louis for treatment of his injuries.   • Fourth grader Ethan Hudlow of Oak Grove Elementary School received media attention last week when news broke that the 9-year-old was registering to vie in a World Cube Association sanctioned Rubik’s Cube competition April 25 in Texas. So far Ethan’s record for solving the Rubik’s Cube is 24 seconds, he says, and even more impressively, his SINGS (Serving the Individual Needs of Gifted Students) teacher Patty Reed just peaked his curiosity in the puzzle a few months ago. “This experience hasn’t just taught Ethan about solving the Rubik’s Cube, he has learned that he is capable of doing something very amazing,” Reed stated. “I’m anxious to see what problem he chooses to tackle next.” Reed recalled how in September
