It seems nearly impossible to fathom that someone as brilliant and funny as Robin Williams could be so tortured emotionally that he takes himself out of the human race. Yet, last week, one by one, each of us across the whole globe, fixed our attention on the sad news of this beloved actor’s suicide. Sometimes, a blip of news in the vast sea of information we are bombarded with daily, seems to slap us so hard in the face that we can almost hear the collective groan rippling through space and time. Then we all try our best to reckon with reality. And what a devastating reality Robin Williams’ death reveals - that someone who, by his very nature, brought

Dec 12,Some have likened America’s educational system to an imperiled ship, buffeted about and taking on water with each so-called reform that blows through like a hurricane. The current ugly storm rocking Missouri’s public schools surrounds the implementation of the Common Core State Standard Initiative (CCSSI) brought into our state by Governor Nixon and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) in 2009/10. Multiple laws prohibit federal involvement in the details of education. Missouri law requires that the legislature be responsible for educational standards and that each local school board be allowed to alter as they see fit. But none of that stopped the governor from bypassing the legislature and signing Missouri onto the CCSSI anyway. The CCSSI encompasses hollow
Nov 04,ST. LOUIS COUNTY – Gov. Jay Nixon today announced that he will create an independent commission to study and make specific recommendations for how to make progress on the issues raised by events in Ferguson. The Governor said the effort must include a thorough and wide-ranging examination of the challenges that were exposed and exacerbated by the death of Michael Brown and its aftermath, and offer specific recommendations for overcoming them. “Throughout the history of our nation, we have struggled to treat all our citizens as equals,” said Gov. Nixon. “Too often we have fallen short of the guiding principles on which our great democracy was founded. For too many, the promise of unalienable rights of life, liberty and the
Oct 21,JEFFERSON CITY – Friday the Office of Public Counsel (OPC) Friday filed a request to the Public Service Commission (PSC) on behalf of the entire state to provide Noranda with a reduced electric rate because losing Noranda would adversely affect all consumers on the Ameren grid. The proposal is an effort to save hundreds of jobs at Noranda and local economies throughout Southeast Missouri. The new stipulation and agreement was filed in the wake of a recent rejection by the PSC to grant a rehearing for Noranda regarding its original power rate reduction request filed last spring. The OPC's previous proposal garnered support from 37 consumer and corporate organizations; and local, state and U.S. elected officials. Friday's OPC document was backed
Oct 14,by Rachael Herndon JEFFERSON CITY – Missouri may join 6 other states that do not have a state lottery in 2016. Speaker-elect John Diehl announced today that he will be proposing a constitutional amendment that will allow the voters to repeal all state sponsored lotteries as it is provided for in the constitution. “We aren’t being honest with Missourians when we make them believe the lottery funds education. It does not,” Diehl said. “Missourians need to revisit the issue and answer some tough questions. Is the lottery an honest way to fund education? Should the state be in the gambling business? Who does the lottery really benefit and who does it hurt?” Over the past summer, the state lottery has been in
Oct 01,There are times when SEMO TIMES must take an editorial stance and Noranda's Rate Case with the PSC, as supported by the Office of Public Counsel, is one of them. SEMO TIMES urges citizens to take some time to read about the issue and then, if you feel compelled, submit the following email to the Public Service Commission by entering your information and clicking "Send." We hope that the Public Service Commission will listen to Governor Nixon and accept the OPC's compromise.
