It seems nearly impossible to fathom that someone as brilliant and funny as Robin Williams could be so tortured emotionally that he takes himself out of the human race. Yet, last week, one by one, each of us across the whole globe, fixed our attention on the sad news of this beloved actor’s suicide. Sometimes, a blip of news in the vast sea of information we are bombarded with daily, seems to slap us so hard in the face that we can almost hear the collective groan rippling through space and time. Then we all try our best to reckon with reality. And what a devastating reality Robin Williams’ death reveals - that someone who, by his very nature, brought

Dec 12,It is with great admiration that we, the staff of SEMO TIMES, put forth this issue devoted to the Veterans of the United States of America. In June of 2007, Toni and I traveled to the Coronado Naval Base in San Diego for the retirement ceremony of family friend, Commodore Dennis Schulz. The ceremony was on the deck of the USS Midway. Toni sang the song we wrote, “Duty Calls,” and I sang the “Star Spangled Banner.” What an honor. What an awe-inspiring ceremony. After the ceremony, the first of several parties was held on the carrier lift (basically a huge elevator to bring the aircraft to/from the deck). I was listening to all the stories told of the men
Nov 16,PHOTO: David Kemna and Jay Brickell honor the 239th birthday of the Marine Corp POPLAR BLUFF – David Kemna of Fort Atkinson Wisconsin and Jay Brickell of Poplar Bluff held a reunion over the weekend to reminisce about their friendship that began in flight school in Florida, their service in the Vietnam War and to honor the 239th birthday of their Marine Corp. We met up at Colton’s Steakhouse. On the table lay Jay’s dress uniform cover (the military term for hat) and an appropriately-decorated Marine Corp birthday cake. The friends met at the Naval Air Station flight school in Pensacola Florida in 1964. Both men had volunteered for service while in college. Upon receiving a whole range of flight instruction,
Nov 15,POPLAR BLUFF – The crowds are gathering. The engines are revving. The Slough ripples with tons of fresh mud. Brick’s Offroad Park is ready for the drivers and the crowds. For years, not a single driver got through The Slough. But last year when Dustin McCutcheon got through it and claimed the $10,000 prize, he showed it could be done. The excitement for this year’s event has been building ever since. “Dustin was the first to get through it,” said Jay Brickell. “A lot of drivers took his example, and they think this year they can do it, too.” “It’s possible that more than one driver may make it through,” said Brickell. Because of that possibility, there will be a
Sep 25,You know them for mud, but did you know that Brick’s Offroad Park built the largest jet sprint boat track in the world? They are getting ready to take the extreme sports world by storm with water. The USSBA Jet Sprint World Series comes to Brick’s this weekend, August 15-17, with over 30 sprint boat teams from all over the world coming to southeast Missouri. “We’ll have boats from New Zealand, Australia, and Canada, as well as from all over the U.S.,” explained Jay Brickell, owner of Brick’s Offroad Park. Jet Sprint racing is fast becoming one of the world’s fastest growing motorsports in the country. It’s a sport that gets the heart racing, whether racer or spectator, where 15-foot boats with 1200HP motors glide over the water at breath-taking speeds. “These boats take off.
