  • It seems nearly impossible to fathom that someone as brilliant and funny as Robin Williams could be so tortured emotionally that he takes himself out of the human race. Yet, last week, one by one, each of us across the whole globe, fixed our attention on the sad news of this beloved actor’s suicide. Sometimes, a blip of news in the vast sea of information we are bombarded with daily, seems to slap us so hard in the face that we can almost hear the collective groan rippling through space and time. Then we all try our best to reckon with reality. And what a devastating reality Robin Williams’ death reveals - that someone who, by his very nature, brought

  • The top story in the outdoors this past week has been well-documented and dramatically over-reported on, so staying true to journalistic form, I’d be remiss if I didn’t beat it into the ground a bit more! Here’s the headline: “The majestic White Stag from Narnia was bludgeoned to death by a heartless murderer in the name of fame, fortune, and evil, and now the good townsfolk are arming themselves with pitchforks and torches and aiming to lynch the accused.” That might had well been the headline anyway, but at the end of the day, the only thing that happened was a deer hunter killed a deer, and a pretty nice one at that. Jerry Kinnaman from Cape Girardeau, MO took

(Not pictured: Tim Kavan and Scott James) By Tim Kavan The Bootheel Bobwhites Quail Forever (QF) Chapter teamed up with the Bayou Strutters National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) chapter to host a youth hunt on Saturday, September 13th in New Madrid County. The weather was chilly and the wind was brisk, but this didn’t prevent the 3 young lads from taking advantage of this opportunity! This event was originally planned as a joint effort with QF, NWTF and the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) to recruit new hunters to the adventures of hunting upland game. • [Publisher's note: this article will also appear in Thursday's newspaper.] UPDATE:  The legislature voted at 11:55pm on Wednesday night; the Governor’s veto stands.  Jefferson City is a strange place these days. Literally, things can turn upside down overnight. That's been the case with House Bill 1326 and Senate Bill 506. The bills, deemed the Mo Farm Bills, are supported by both the Missouri Cattle Producers and Missouri's Dairy Cattle industry. They were designed to strengthen Missouri's agricultural industry, which pretty much everyone agreed was a good thing. Just over two months ago these bills were also heavily supported in the state capitol. At the time of passage, the Missouri Cattlemen's Association's (MCA) wrote, “The MCA strongly supports the bipartisan 105
