  • It seems nearly impossible to fathom that someone as brilliant and funny as Robin Williams could be so tortured emotionally that he takes himself out of the human race. Yet, last week, one by one, each of us across the whole globe, fixed our attention on the sad news of this beloved actor’s suicide. Sometimes, a blip of news in the vast sea of information we are bombarded with daily, seems to slap us so hard in the face that we can almost hear the collective groan rippling through space and time. Then we all try our best to reckon with reality. And what a devastating reality Robin Williams’ death reveals - that someone who, by his very nature, brought

  • The newly instated Junior High Trap team competed in its first meet Friday, Oct. 16, at the Poplar Bluff Gun Club, showcasing some real potential despite having limited time to practice shooting, according to spectators. “Several coaches of other schools were impressed with the skill level of the team,” stated Sandy Pike, a parent. “Trap is one of the biggest up and coming sports, and it ties in well with all the conservation opportunities we have in this area.” In September, the Board of Education approved the establishment of a trap team at the Junior High level so students can gain two more years of competitive experience before entering high school. • It is no secret that more than six years into office President Obama continues to push a radical anti-gun agenda and attempt to bypass the law-making authority of Congress. We saw this recently in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ (ATF) proposal to restrict the manufacture and sale of ammunition commonly used by sportsman and hunters. Many of you shared in my outrage for the proposed ban and together we made our voices heard. This week, the ATF dropped its proposed ban, tweeting “You spoke, we listened.” This fight to protect the Second Amendment was not easily won. In a bipartisan letter from 239 members of Congress, my colleagues and I wrote the ATF strongly voicing our opposition.

  • Poplar Bluff, Mo. - The Friends of the NRA held their 22nd Annual Fundraising Banquet Saturday at Poplar Bluff's Black River Coliseum. Albert Boeving, one of the organizers of the event, noted that this year's event set a record in terms of the net amount raised per attendee. “Our attendance was down slightly because of many competing events going on this weekend,” said Boeving. “But we actually set a record with the amount of money raised per attendee.” The event netted over $75,000 and attracted about 550 attendees. The event included social time and a live auction of several items. Over 90 guns were won in raffles or bought by attendees at the event. “Really, it is amazing that we

Nixon is set to appoint Chris Michel next week to finish out the remainder of the term of Butler County Collector due to the passing of the current Collector, Brenda Fox. SEMO TIMES contacted Michel and asked about the appointment, he had no comment. That is not necessarily uncommon for an appointee before it is made official. Michel did respond when asked about the upcoming November election, he was recently nominated by the Democratic Convention to be on the ballot for the upcoming election. Michel said he was excited about the campaign. He already has a campaign website.
