Dec 12,On 02-24-15 John D Barnett (33 years old, of Poplar Bluff) was sentenced to six years in the Missouri Department of Corrections on a conviction for Possession of Child Pornography (class C felony). This conviction stemmed from a Poplar Bluff Police Department/Missouri Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force investigation which began in March 2013. Mar 09,POPLAR BLUFF – When Kaplan came on board on August 18, he was faced with the city’s self-funded health insurance nearing a $3,000,000 deficit. His first step in getting out of such a huge hole was to find a health insurance consultant. A request for bids was sent out. The city received two qualified bids for insurance consultants. The low bid of $68,000 was submitted by First Community Insurance of Poplar Bluff. A bid of $85,000 was submitted by AON, an international company. To evaluate the two bids, a committee comprised of seven employees from different departments within the city was formed. Oct 27,Press Release - On 9/30 at approximately 11:26 am employees at Minit Mart convenience store (located in the 3900 block of US Hwy 67) reported a gas drive off involving a white Chrysler mini van. A few minutes later, Poplar Bluff Animal Control Officer Mark Hastings saw the van driving south on US Business Hwy 67 in Poplar Bluff, and reported its location and direction of travel to the Poplar Bluff Police Department. Oct 01,POPLAR BLUFF - In a letter dated September 19, the City Manager informed council that his estimate to bring the city hall structure into code compliance and building repair is $2M. Kaplan stated in his letter that staff was cataloging all of the code violations the building is currently in violation, "to hold governmental structures to the same standard as other structures when enforcing code compliance." Kaplan wrote, "I am currently preparing a plan to continue government activities by temporarily relocating City Hall, Police Department and Municipal Court to other locations since the costs of renting will be significantly lower than the anticipated costs of repair." Sep 21,POPLAR BLUFF - The Poplar Bluff Police Department received information last week that Jerry Carr, Jr., reported missing in Caruthersville last month, was seen in South Poplar Bluff on Sept 3rd at 5:30 pm. According to a Carr family member, Jerry Carr was a passenger in a maroon 1990’s model Chevrolet regular cab pickup with a black stripe on the hood. Carr may be in the company of an older white male who goes by the name “Cajun;” and he may be frequenting a residence in the 1800 block of Indiana Ave in Poplar Bluff.
