  • It seems nearly impossible to fathom that someone as brilliant and funny as Robin Williams could be so tortured emotionally that he takes himself out of the human race. Yet, last week, one by one, each of us across the whole globe, fixed our attention on the sad news of this beloved actor’s suicide. Sometimes, a blip of news in the vast sea of information we are bombarded with daily, seems to slap us so hard in the face that we can almost hear the collective groan rippling through space and time. Then we all try our best to reckon with reality. And what a devastating reality Robin Williams’ death reveals - that someone who, by his very nature, brought

  • Students and faculty at Three Rivers College are going to “Shake It Out” next Thursday, Oct. 16. No, it’s not a new dance craze. It’s part of a statewide effort to prepare the campus and the rest of the state for an earthquake. Jack Armor, Fire Training Coordinator for TRC says scientists can say with certainty that there is an earthquake in our future in Southeast Missouri. The question is only “when” and “how big will it be?” Armor said Three Rivers has participated in the event in the past, but he considers this year’s event an important one for gauging the college’s earthquake readiness. “Everyone on this campus will participate, and everyone on each of the satellite campuses will

  • Kids young and old get excited as they pack their cars with lawn chairs and blankets to head off toward a night under the heavens to watch a movie. The concept is as American as it gets, with the first drive-in theater opening in June 1933 in New Jersey. By 1950 the invention made its way to the Mark Twain National Forest as Clark Davis from Ellington built the 21 Drive-in Theater. The theater is located 10 miles northeast of Van Buren, 16 miles west of Ellsinore and 16 miles south of Ellington along Highway 21, but that didn't stop the crowds from coming out and enjoying this new way to watch the movies. • Piedmont, Mo. - SEMO TIMES was contacted late Sunday night about an exceptional father-daughter duo from Piedmont who took third place in A-flight in the Piedmont Country Club tournament this weekend. Avery Green and her father, Jarred, scored 71 on the Saturday and 69 on Sunday for a score of 4-under par on the par-72 course. The tournament field of coed's was dominated by adults and the father-daughter pair appeared to the other competitors as just a darling twosome until the first day's scores were posted. The family reported that Avery's drive was used several times in the two-day event and her putter dropped a couple of putts. Jarred and mother, Kaylie, were extremely proud of Avery's performance. When Avery
