It seems nearly impossible to fathom that someone as brilliant and funny as Robin Williams could be so tortured emotionally that he takes himself out of the human race. Yet, last week, one by one, each of us across the whole globe, fixed our attention on the sad news of this beloved actor’s suicide. Sometimes, a blip of news in the vast sea of information we are bombarded with daily, seems to slap us so hard in the face that we can almost hear the collective groan rippling through space and time. Then we all try our best to reckon with reality. And what a devastating reality Robin Williams’ death reveals - that someone who, by his very nature, brought

Dec 12,Angela Pearson is one of those people who unites a community like no one else. As former mayor of Poplar Bluff, she was used to dealing with challenges. But nothing could have prepared her for the challenge she now faces, with a diagnosis of melanoma cancer that has gone to several parts of her body. Yes, admits Angela…this is a life-changing development. But she certainly is not going to flinch in the face of this challenge, no more than she has any challenge in her life. Of course, a battle becomes more easily won with an army. And Angela Pearson has an army of friends who are coming to her aid. “Angels for Angela” is a benefit to be held
May 07,“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land” Chronicles 7:14 That was the verse before a crowd of about 50 people who gathered Friday evening at Northpoint Nazarene Church. Pastor Greg Gilberto had called the Prayer Summit in hopes of beginning a healing process for the city of Poplar Bluff. “I have never done this before,” Gilberto told the gathering. “But I feel this is something we need to do.” Gilberto has been disturbed by what he described as a feeling of a “wet blanket” laying over
Apr 18,Poplar Bluff – The controversy over Council Member Peter Tinsley's comments on Facebook concerning President Barack Obama and Obamacare again bubbled up at Tuesday night's meeting of the Poplar Bluff City Council when Tommy Robinson, pastor of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church again appeared before the council. “The last time I was here, I presented a concern about Councilman Peter Tinsley and comments he had made on Facebook. We requested that he apologize for his statements and that he take down the post,” said Robinson. He agreed those requests had been honored. “And I thought at the time, I would not need to be back.” But the controversy continues to be a problem in Tinsley's Ward 5, said Robinson. “The community
Sep 03,Poplar Bluff, Mo. - The Poplar Bluff City Council voted 5-2 to approve a one-year contract for City Manager with Heath Kaplan this evening. On Wednesday of last week, at a special session of the city council, members approved 7-0 to hire Mr. Kaplan. On Friday, the city issued a press release introducing their new city manager. Tonight's vote was whether to issue Kaplan a one-year contract laying out the duties, salary, termination procedures, benefits and allowances. Council members Betty Absheer and Ed Degaris voted no. Mayor Pearson, Mayor Pro Tem Rushin, along with councilmen Brannum, Tinsley and Johson voted yes for the contract. At the beginning of the meeting during the citizen input portion, former city councilwoman McVey challenged the council for
Aug 04,There is no way Angela Pearson could have known how her life was going to change with one simple act: running for a seat on the Poplar Bluff City Council. She never imagined that in a relatively brief amount of time, she would be sitting in the Mayor's Office, in the Mayor's Seat. She looks back on this past year and admits that it has been a lot like a roller-coaster ride – at times thrilling, and at times downright scary. But she is happy with the overall results. She's been interviewed by out of town news media. She's gotten hate mail. She's gotten love mail. There is no crown for this office. As matter of fact, there really isn't
