It seems nearly impossible to fathom that someone as brilliant and funny as Robin Williams could be so tortured emotionally that he takes himself out of the human race. Yet, last week, one by one, each of us across the whole globe, fixed our attention on the sad news of this beloved actor’s suicide. Sometimes, a blip of news in the vast sea of information we are bombarded with daily, seems to slap us so hard in the face that we can almost hear the collective groan rippling through space and time. Then we all try our best to reckon with reality. And what a devastating reality Robin Williams’ death reveals - that someone who, by his very nature, brought

Dec 12,Three Rivers College is reducing the cost for many veterans and their family members to attend the college. The college’s Board of Trustees recently approved altering the college’s tuition policy to charge “in-district” tuition to all veterans, their spouses and children. “Our veterans and their families have been willing to make unfathomable sacrifices for our country, and it’s only right that we do our best to support them when they return home,” said Dr. Wesley Payne, President of Three Rivers College. “This new program will ensure that all of our region’s veterans will have the most affordable access to higher education that we can give them.” “In-district” tuition is the lower rate charged to residents of the college’s four-county taxing
May 15,It is no secret that America has the finest fighting force this world has ever seen. When those brave military men and women return from service, it is our duty to provide them with the benefits they have earned and deserve. From long wait times to subpar care, the Department of Veterans Affairs has not provided the exceptional care that we expect for our heroes. This is especially apparent for veterans in rural areas. As an advocate for rural America, it has been my mission to improve the care of these veterans, and all veterans across this great nation. There have been multiple improvements to the VA recently, including the Veterans Choice program established in the Veterans Access, Choice, and
Mar 27,“Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans,” an event to recognize the veterans of the Vietnam War, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 27, in the Bess Activity Center at Three Rivers College. The event is an early celebration of Vietnam Veterans Day, which is March 29. It sponsored by Chapter 1056 of Vietnam Veterans of America, an organization with the goals of campaigning on issues important to Vietnam veterans, creating a new identity for this generation of veterans, and improving public perception of Vietnam veterans. This is an opportunity for our community to come together for the long overdue welcome home the Vietnam veterans deserve for their service to our country. Friday’s event will include speaker Bill Kiefer, membership chair
Mar 25,The Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Ladies Auxiliary recently honored several of our students and teachers for their patriotism. Poplar Bluff High School juniors Chase Burch, Nikkia Hickman and Stephanie Hobbs were awarded Monday, Dec. 15, by VFW Post 6477 on South Broadway for their winning essays in the Voice of Democracy contest. Hickman was also named a district winner. This year’s theme was why veterans are important to our nation’s history and future. In addition, PBHS social studies teacher Gail Rosmarin and Craig Hamilton, who teaches music at Lake Road Elementary School, won both the local and district Smart/Maher VFW Citizenship Teacher Awards for promoting America’s history and traditions effectively, instilling a sense of national pride in their
Jan 06,POPLAR BLUFF - Those of us in Poplar Bluff tend to take its towering stare for granted, but there was a time the John J. Pershing Veterans Hospital was only an idea. With this week’s observance of Veterans Day, Angela Smith, Public Affairs Officer at the VA Medical Center, recounts that the hospital has a fascinating past and an equally exciting future. The Veterans Health Administration had its birth during the Civil War, when the first federal hospitals sprung up in order to service the young nation’s volunteer forces. Just a month before the Civil War ended, on March 3, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln authorized the first national soldiers’ and sailors’ asylum to provide medical and convalescent care for discharged
