• KENNETT, Mo. - The Kennett City Council, Tuesday, discussed a number of issues and inked a deal with NewWave Communications to provide telephone service to the city. Kennett Police Department Chief Johnny Dennis approached the council with the proposal citing a net savings to the city of close to $10,000 annually. The 60-month contract costs the city approximately $36,600 plus taxes per year opposed to a bill of approximately $45,000 last year, Dennis said. The communications company will use a portion of Kennett's City Light, Gas and Water infrastructure to provide telephone service, which includes backup capabilities in case of disaster or emergencies, the chief added.   • The City of Poplar Bluff is home to one of the 3000 reported disc golf courses in the U.S. Clark Allen, director of the Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation Department says the 9-hole disc golf course has been in place at Hendrickson Park for about a year now. Set on an 8-acre plot of land, it joins a butterfly garden, playground equipment and shelters as features of the park. The idea came about from local fans of the game, and the course was largely built by volunteers. Use of the park and the disc golf course is free to the public, and it has turned out to be a great addition not just for the players who regularly use it,

  • More than $25K Raised During Annual Mule Skinner The Poplar Bluff Mules Booster Club generated around $26,000—100 percent of which will support Poplar Bluff R-I’s athletic programs—during the sixth annual Mule Skinner Golf Tournament held on Friday, Aug. 8, at Westwood Hills Country Club.   • Student ambassadors consisting of nearly 60 upperclassman led Freshman Orientation on Thursday, Aug. 7, at Poplar Bluff High School, holding competitions in E.T. Peters Gym to serve as an icebreaker, and then breaking up the 318 new students in attendance into smaller groups to play games, get questions answered and tour campus. “I can’t begin to tell you how incredibly proud I am of the ambassadors,” said PBHS math teacher Hope Conover, Student Council sponsor. “They were phenomenal representatives of our school and did a fabulous job of being true leaders.” An idea that StuCo came up with this year, ambassadors plan on checking in with their group of freshmen once a month during advisory, helping to establish a seamless

  • On 08-19-14 at approximately 1:50 am, Officers with the Poplar Bluff Police Department received information that Christopher Gainwell, a subject with several outstanding felony warrants (including charges stemming from a shooting incident reported August 10th), was hiding at a residence in the 1200 block of Bradley st. Officers responded to the residence, and knocked at the front door.  As they did, Gainwell attempted to flee the residence through the back door.  Doing so, Gainwell encountered an Officer stationed at the rear of the residence; and he tried to retreat back into the residence.  Gainwell was taken to the ground and, after a brief struggle, taken into custody.
