• JEFFERSON CITY—State Sen. Doug Libla, R-Poplar Bluff, is urging citizens to participate in the Missouri Department of Conservation’s public comment period in regards to possible changes to the 2016-2017 deer hunting season. Throughout the summer of 2014, the Department of Conservation gathered nearly 4,000 comments through public input on the deer management plan and proposed regulation changes using quantitative scientific surveys of deer hunters, numerous open houses were conducted around the state, and developed a dedicated web page. As a result of public input consistent with biological consideration, seven recommendations for regulation changes have been drafted.   • Three Rivers College will hold a ceremony to honor Coach Gene Bess for achieving 1,200 lifetime wins as coach of the Raiders basketball team on Saturday, February 7, in the Bess Activity Center on the college’s campus in Poplar Bluff, following the Raiders game against State Fair Community College. The game begins at 7 p.m. All interested media outlets are invited to attend. The ceremony will include a presentation of the game ball from Coach Bess’ historic 1,200th win. There will also be presentations from Three Rivers College, the Three Rivers Booster Club, and distinguished guests such as State Senator Doug Libla and State Representative Steve Cookson.   • Gene Bess, head coach of the Raiders men’s basketball team at Three Rivers College, cemented his place in basketball history by securing his 1,200th win over State Fair Community College on Thursday, January 6 in Sedalia, Missouri. “I feel overwhelmed but very proud to be part of the team that allowed me to reach this milestone,” said Bess. “It’s an amazing achievement, and one that has been made possible by the extraordinary players, coaches, and supporters I’ve been able to work with here at Three Rivers.” Bess has coached men’s basketball at Three Rivers for over 40 years, leading the Raiders to two NJCAA national championships in 1979 and 1992.
