• On Wednesday, May 6 over 250 4th grade students from Qulin, Fisk, Neelyville, Sacred Heart and Malden schools came to Lake Wappapello’s Visitor’s Center for Ecology Day. Students attended 9 sessions learning about the Earth, resources, and the lake. The event was hosted by Stephanie Milner, 4-H Youth Development Specialist, with the University of Missouri Extension Butler County. Presenters came from the US Forest Service, US Army Corps of Engineers, University of Missouri Extension, and the Missouri Department of Conservation

  • “Confluence,” the annual literary journal of Three Rivers College, has received three awards from the American Scholastic Press Association for its 2014 issue. The journal, which is put together by the college’s Languages department, contains poetry, short fiction, and essays written by Three Rivers’ students, faculty, and staff. “We’re extremely proud to receive these awards, especially considering the level of competition,” said Gregory Snell, an Instructor of English at the college and one of Confluence’s coordinators. “We put a lot of work into ‘Confluence’ every year, and it’s rewarding to see it get the attention it deserves.” “Confluence” was one of five university, community college, and high school literary magazines to receive “First Place with Merit.” The award is given

  • Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to explain the City’s new vacation incentive program. After reading the Daily American Republic article titled “Spaghetti-Gate”, I felt I needed to respond to inform the public about the program and my rationale behind offering the program. I am a member of Rotary and the idea of exchanging a purchased dinner ticket for a day off was born when I wanted to do two things: 1. Improve employee morale, which in turn increases productivity. 2. Help raise money for a local non-profit. Why is this important? I’ll give you two examples: 1. Some employees working for the street department worked for two days during the heavy snow days to clear the City streets.
