The Poplar Bluff City Council welcomed new City Manager Heath Kaplan at the conclusion of his first day on the job, and also took care of a number of pieces of city business Monday evening. As it happened, his first day on the job was also Kaplan's birthday. After being serenaded with a rendition of “Happy Birthday” by the council members and crowd at the meeting, Kaplan, thanked the citizens of Poplar Bluff for his warm reception. Mayor Angela Pearson greeted Kaplan, and also thanked interim City Manager Mark Massingham for his service to the community. The USSBA Jet Sprint World Series comes to Brick’s this weekend, August 15-17, with over 30 sprint boat teams from all over the world coming to southeast Missouri. “We’ll have boats from New Zealand, Australia, and Canada, as well as from all over the U.S.,” explained Jay Brickell, owner of Brick’s Offroad Park. All great things start with an idea. Joe Bancroft still recalls the day he was hit with a title wave of an idea. “It was July 25, 2011,” recalls Bancroft. “I started a Facebook page called Wappapello the 80's. And within 24 hours, over 100 people had joined the page.” So, Bancroft started thinking about it, and he asked a friend of his, Roy Ward, if it would be possible to organize a reunion party on Facebook.
