• The Junior High Cheerleaders won the National Cheerleaders Association High School Open National Championship in the large intermediate division on Sunday, Jan. 18, in St. Charles. This was another first for Poplar Bluff Schools, according to cheer coach Christy Young. The victory comes on the heels of the Poplar Bluff High School Competition Cheer Squad’s back-to-back state championship. The high schoolers will go on to compete at the National High School Cheerleading Championship on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 7-8, at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla.   • State Sen. Doug Libla, R-Poplar Bluff, is urging citizens to attend an open hearing of the Missouri Public Service Commission in Dexter, Mo., on Jan. 26, at the Elks Lodge, 325 N. Two Mile Road, to provide testimony on an electric rate case filed by Ameren Missouri. Citizens will be given the opportunity to speak on the proposed rate increase. Last year, Ameren Missouri filed an electric rate case seeking to increase annual electric revenues by approximately $264 million, or 9.65 percent. The filing includes a request to continue its fuel adjustment clause that reflects changes in the cost of fuel used to generate electricity on customers’ bills through a separately-identified surcharge or credit outside a general rate case. “We

  • Poplar Bluff Junior and Senior High teachers participated in the first Technology Camp during collaboration day on Friday, Jan. 16, featuring a series of break-out sessions led by R-I staff emphasizing content, the web, apps, engaging students and classroom management. Published author Julie Smith, an adjunct professor of Webster University and Southern Illinois University, delivered the keynote speech about media literacy. R-I Instructional Technology Facilitators Valerie Ivy and Candace Warren organized the Tech Camp, with assistance from Chief Technology Officer Aaron Badgley. Help Desk teacher Julie Carda and assistant Tony Kirkley, along with their dedicated students at PBHS, were also instrumental in making the event a success.

  • A total of 17 active members of the Poplar Bluff High School Future Farmers of America attended the annual Greenhand Motivational Conference on Wednesday, Jan. 7, at Three River College, during which students learned about opportunities within the national youth organization. Through interactive workshops and skits from state FFA officers, local members were encouraged to be positive role models, get involved, make sound choices and make a positive difference in their lives, school and community, according to a press release from the Missouri FFA Association.

  • O’Neal Elementary School recently made 100 Christmas cards for Altrusa to circulate at the Northside Nutrition Center through the Meals on Wheels program, plus students created placemats for Altrusa’s annual Christmas party.
