  • On 08-14-14 Butler County Coroner Jim Akers confirmed that the body found in the 1300 block of West Maud st in Poplar Bluff had been identified as that of Justin R Allen of Arlington Texas. Justin Allen had apparently been camped in the area for some time, as several people reported seeing him near the area where his body was found.  Some of these witnesses described Allen as unusually thin; and said he seemed confused or disoriented. Examination of the scene and Justin Allen's body revealed no signs of struggle or violence.   X-rays determined that there were no broken bones; results of the autopsy were inconclusive, and the cause and manner of death could not be determined.   • ‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over’ Campaign Will Target Drunk Drivers  Dexter, MO – From mid-August through Labor Day, local police will be out in force as part of the annual nationwide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” crackdown on drunk driving. The crackdown, which will include high-visibility enforcement throughout Dexter, will run from August 15 through September 1, 2014. The effective nationwide drunk driving crackdown will include high-visibility enforcement, high-profile events, and will be supported by national paid advertising, creating a comprehensive campaign to curb drunk driving in August and through the Labor Day holiday weekend. Dexter Police Department said its Officers will be aggressively looking for drunk drivers during the crackdown and will arrest anyone caught driving drunk.

  • Brick’s Water Speedway in Poplar Bluff, Missouri to Host International Event After 10 years abroad, the World Series of Sprint Boat Racing is returning to the United States. Brick’s Water Speedway in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, will host this United States Sprint Boat Association (USSBA) and Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) sanctioned event on August 15-17, 2014. More than 30 teams from four countries will be represented; countries include Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the United States. Each team will be timed as they race their boats through the world’s largest track. Many will complete the maze-like track in less than a minute, running at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour.   • First United Methodist Church Missions and Outreach Committee SERVE2014 – Serving our Community Do you know someone who is elderly or disabled, owns their home, and could use a little help with some projects around their house like minor repairs, window washing, gutter cleaning, trimming hedges, and things like that?
