  • Poplar Bluff, Mo. - When the nation's Veterans Affairs Health system came under fire because of a scandal that grew out of a Phoenix, Az., VA Hospital, U.S. Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill stepped to the forefront immediately to work to improve healthcare for U.S. Veterans.   • Brick’s Water Speedway in Poplar Bluff, Missouri to Host International Event After 10 years abroad, the World Series of Sprint Boat Racing is returning to the United States. Brick’s Water Speedway in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, will host this United States Sprint Boat Association (USSBA) and Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) sanctioned event on August 15-17, 2014. More than 30 teams from four countries will be represented; countries include Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the United States.   • Poplar Bluff, Mo. - The Poplar Bluff City Council voted 5-2 to approve a one-year contract for City Manager with Heath Kaplan this evening. On Wednesday of last week, at a special session of the city council, members approved 7-0 to hire Mr. Kaplan.  On Friday, the city issued a press release introducing their new city manager. Tonight's vote was whether to issue Kaplan a one-year contract laying out the duties, salary, termination procedures, benefits and allowances. Council members Betty Absheer and Ed Degaris voted no. Mayor Pearson, Mayor Pro Tem Rushin, along with councilmen Brannum, Tinsley and Johson voted yes for the contract.
