It seems nearly impossible to fathom that someone as brilliant and funny as Robin Williams could be so tortured emotionally that he takes himself out of the human race. Yet, last week, one by one, each of us across the whole globe, fixed our attention on the sad news of this beloved actor’s suicide. Sometimes, a blip of news in the vast sea of information we are bombarded with daily, seems to slap us so hard in the face that we can almost hear the collective groan rippling through space and time. Then we all try our best to reckon with reality. And what a devastating reality Robin Williams’ death reveals - that someone who, by his very nature, brought

Dec 12,BUTLER COUNTY - SEMO TIMES spoke with Butler County Clerk Tonyi Deffendall on Monday to find out the details of counting votes when there is a write-in candidate. Here are the bullet points of that conversation: Votes cast must include both the write-in name and the arrow must be connected to the right of that name Any ballots with a write-in candidate marked (every contest has a write-in listed on the ballot) are automatically separated by the voting machine for later counting The only race where a candidate has registered to be a write-in is the County Collector race, no other write-ins are allowed At 7pm and at each of the 26 polling stations the write-in ballots will be tallied Each polling station will
Nov 04,Butler County hasn’t seen a race like this since, well, ever. An election with two Republicans running, one on the ballot and one as a write-in, and a Democrat is very unique in this heavily Republican county. One key controversy within the race focuses on the $25,000 compensation for collecting taxes for the city of Poplar Bluff; this is in addition to the $62k salary the county official receives. Tammy Marler, the write-in candidate, was first to speak out against using the office for personal gain. The interim collector and Democrat candidate, Chris Michel, told SEMO TIMES he would not accept any personal payments of tax income. Emily Parks, Republican Candidate, choosing to evade giving a direct answer to the
Nov 01,POPLAR BLUFF – When long-time Butler County Collector Brenda Fox died in August, she left not only many mourning friends and family but also a vacant county post. In November, Butler County voters will have the opportunity to elect a new county collector. Three names are currently in contention for the post: Chris Michel, Emily Parks, and Tammy Marler. CHRIS MICHEL - DEMOCRAT Michel believes he can bring “exceptional service” to the post through both customer service and teamwork at the Butler County Courthouse. “Eight years ago, I lost my wife to cancer and at that point I really needed to concentrate on being both a mom and a dad to my sons,” said Michel. But now the boys are
Oct 20,If Tammy Marler were to choose a favorite superhero, it would surely be “Underdog.” That’s because she realizes that is basically her position as a write-in candidate for the office of Butler County Collector on November 4. Her story is not one of a blue blood Republican dynasty. Her story is one of a woman who has worked her whole life to overcome odds. “I was born and raised in Butler County living at Lake Wappapello. I was one of nine children living in a home with just three bedrooms and one bathroom. I shared a bedroom with two of my sisters, one of them my twin sister,” recalls Marler. She came from a single income family, with her father
Oct 16,The Butler County Republican Party met at the Poplar Bluff Chamber of Commerce to nominate a replacement candidate for the upcoming November election for County Collector. The office was vacated earlier this month when County Collector Brenda Fox passed away. In a very cordial yet extremely professional meeting, Chairman Eddy Justice and Secretary Joe Leahy laid out the ground rules for the evening's nominations and voting. With 22 of the 24 Butler County Delegates present, Justice informed the room that 12 votes was necessary to carry the nomination. Tammy Marler, Larry Kimbrow, Emily Parks and Jerrica Fox were nominated by the delegates. Once the nominations were closed each candidate was given up to 3 minutes to stump for the party's
