• I’ve already seen some deer forecasts for my home state of Missouri, and it’s a wonder we even bother buying tags according to a few journalists. With all the doomsday talk about our poor, diseased, malnourished, and minuscule deer herd, I thought a bit of logic and facts might keep a few guys from selling off their rifles! First of all, there is one other authority on our deer herd that you can safely take advice from, and that’s Mr. Jim Low, the head writer for the Missouri Department of Conservation. As of right now, the only two people I’d listen to in reference to deer numbers is Jim and myself, there may be other legitimate sources out there, I

  • We learned from the Court’s ruling last week that former Poplar Bluff City Manager Doug Bagby had been operating under an illegal contract for over 10 years. Those who actually took five minutes to read the contract along with the unambiguous city ordinance and,  equally plain, Missouri state statutes knew immediately that it was an illegal contract. Any lawyer who saw that city manager contract would tell their client they have no contract. But, Bagby's lawyer pushed ahead and threatened to sue the city for the money stipulated in the illegal contract. Council turned to the courts and asked, "How much do we owe on an illegal contract?" In November, Butler County voters will have the opportunity to elect a new county collector. Three names are currently in contention for the post: Chris Michel, Emily Parks, and Tammy Marler. CHRIS MICHEL - DEMOCRAT Michel believes he can bring “exceptional service” to the post through both customer service and teamwork at the Butler County Courthouse. “Eight years ago, I lost my wife to cancer and at that point I really needed to concentrate on being both a mom and a dad to my sons,” said Michel. But now the boys are

That is the week scheduled for the film, “A Matter of Faith” to be shown at Poplar Bluff’s AMC Showplace Theatre. The film is about a Christian girl who goes off to college for her freshman year. Once there, she is heavily influenced by her biology professor, who teaches that evolution is the answer to the origins of life on earth. Her father decides he needs to take action in order to keep his daughter from drifting away from her foundations of faith. Funke says he first ran cross the movie on a website,

  • This week’s column will venture into a different direction than normal as I intend to give some wisdom from the Woods that gets away from hunting and fishing. How about flower growing? Our house is at the end of a private lane off Butler Co. Road 415 and there is timber lining the driveway all the way to the house. When visitors approach the driveway, they see a sign that lists some of the items available from Maggie’s Farm & Hatchery. Maggie is our great-granddaughter and approaching her third birthday. Their house is less than 100 yds. from ours and that little rascal routinely visits us with her dogs in tow. When we moved out here in 1979, there was
