POPLAR BLUFF - Three Rivers College is honoring U.S. Veterans this week with a full slate of activities. On Tuesday, a Veterans Day Ceremony was held at 10 a.m. at the campus’ flagpole, with Army/Air Force appreciation Day to follow on Wednesday at noon at the Bess Student Center. Face Painting activities will be part of the fun. Thursday is designated as Navy/Coast Guard Appreciation Day. The week ends with Friday’s R.E.D. Day to remember all deployed troops by wearing red shirts. A “Rock Your Red” bowling party will take place at Bluff Lanes, 6 to 9 p.m., for anyone wearing red that has a college ID. Those who long to take a walk on the wild side will have that opportunity tomorrow night at the Sixth Annual Howling at the Moon event hosted by the Animal Welfare Alliance of Southeast Missouri. The event takes place from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Westwood Center. Catering will be provided by Maya’s and “Thin Blue Line” will provide the entertainment. Sponsors for the event include Coffman & Company, Key Drugs, Hicks Animal Hospital, the Ripley County Veterinary Service, Budweiser, First Midwest Bank, Dental Arts Group, and Pack’s Do-It Center. Owner Barbara Pelton says that many people have come to view her Open House as their official kick-off for the holiday season. “We have up to 200 people visit our store for this event,” said Pelton. Hours for this year’s event are 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov.7, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8. Nov 06,Republican Candidate Emily Clark Parks won Tuesday night’s election for the Butler County Collector’s Office by 437 votes. Her total votes were 3,974 versus Write-In Candidate Tammy Marler’s 3,537 votes. Democrat Chris Michel obtained 889 votes. Clark, the official Republican candidate, won 47.31 percent of the county’s votes and slightly over 5 percent more than Marler’s write-in votes. By 8:15 p.m. all 27 Butler County precincts had reported in, having had to carry their boxes of ballots up the stairs of the Butler County Courthouse because the elevator was not working. Nov 04,POPLAR BLUFF - Monday night’s meeting of the Poplar Bluff City Council was largely a house-keeping session, other than an announcement at the end of the meeting by City Manager Heath Kaplan that he intends to begin publication of a newsletter from his office in order to get accurate information to the people of Poplar Bluff. He said the purpose of the newsletter will be to “line out all the information regarding financial decisions” he has made, addressing each of the issues raised in a recent editorial published by the Daily American Republic. “There are 11 items that I will address that were concerns of the DAR.
