Source: Poplar Bluff Schools Oak Grove Elementary School is holding a book drive November 30-December 4 as part of its Jingle Jog community service project to help stock a Little Red Bookshelf at participating businesses. The Bright Futures Site Council of the elementary school announced the Little Red Bookshelf project earlier this year with an ambitious goal of collecting 4,500 new or gently used children’s books by the end of the calendar year. The books will be collected by a project volunteer who will sort them and place a sticker on the cover indicating whether the book may be taken home or should be kept on the shelf. The books will then be distributed among local businesses in the community that have agreed to be distribution sites. Project volunteers plan to stock the

Three Rivers College nursing students Walter Rommel of Broseley and Kathleen Soriano of Poplar Bluff have been awarded the Louise Shull Medler Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship awards both students funding to cover the cost of the NCLEX-RN licensing exam after the completion of their studies. The scholarship was endowed in memory of Louise Shull Medler, a Qulin native who worked as a nurse for over 20 years in the Poplar Bluff area. One of the original nurses for Kneibert Clinic, Ms. Medler also served as a staff trainer for the Department of Social Services. Funding for the scholarship was given by the Shull family and friends. Nov 20,Three Rivers College will hold its bi-annual mass casualty training event on Tuesday, November 24. The training helps prepare students in participating programs for a mass casualty emergency such as a natural disaster or terrorist attack and tests the college’s emergency response plans. The training event will be held at the college’s Poplar Bluff campus, near the Bess Activity Center. Students from several fields of study will participate in the training, including three classes of nursing students, EMT students, and Paramedic students. The training will also receive support from regional medical centers, local ambulance services, law enforcement agencies, and fire departments. Nov 20,Source: Poplar Bluff Schools Several hundred patrons ate during the Community Thanksgiving Dinner on Tuesday, Nov. 10, in the Student Activity Center, provided free of charge by Chartwells School Dining Services in partnership with the Poplar Bluff R-I School District. The Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps volunteered to help direct traffic, the Board of Education and administration joined the kitchen staff in serving the food, elementary art students designed the placemats, the Senior High Studio Jazz Band performed, and Student Council offered face painting for children. Nearly $200 was raised for the Bread Shed and the Haven House in a collection effort spearheaded by student leaders. The Community Thanksgiving Dinner is a long-standing tradition that was established by Chartwells.
Nov 20,Source: Poplar Bluff Schools Speaker Todd Richardson issued a Poplar Bluff High School senior a resolution on behalf of the Missouri House of Representatives on Thursday, Nov. 11, for founding Students Against Sexual Assault, the only such student-led organization in the state on the high school level as far as the legislator is aware of, he said. With full support of the R-I administration and Board of Education, Grace Hudson established SASA this school year to raise awareness and protect teens from sexual assault, and domestic and dating violence.
