It’s going to be a big weekend for Poplar Bluff, with all kinds of music-centered activities occurring as Music On Main takes center stage in downtown Poplar Bluff on Saturday. But even before Saturday, the weekend will get started with a Night of Jazz for Poplar Bluff’s new Black River Public Radio Station, beginning at 7 p.m. The event will be held at downtown’s Black River Gallery Ballroom. Tickets are just $25 and will feature food from local restauranteurs, beverages from Luecke Distributors, and most importantly, jazz from the Black River Jazz Orchestra, which will feature area musicians including Dan Jackson, Ryan Humphrey, Pete Parysek, and jazz vocalist Judy Richardson-Rockwell. Though there wasn’t a lot of fanfare, Poplar Bluff’s first public radio station, Black River Public Radio, made its on-air debut Friday, June 5. But, there will be a big splash on June 19, when the group hosts its second fundraiser to raise money for equipment and programming for the new station. “We are on-air, which is very exciting,” said Robert Smith, one of the organizers of the new public radio station. “We’re playing a variety of music, but this is just the beginning of what we will be offering the community.” The June 19 fundraising event will be held at Black River Gallery, and will feature live jazz music, great food, and perhaps most importantly, great company in the

More than 75 supporters celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony for Poplar Bluff School’ new high school, the impetus of the district buildings plan, on Thursday, June 4, at the present site of the 5th & 6th Grade Center. In attendance were state and city officials, business leaders, project managers, R-I administrators, the School Board of Education and members of the various committees established beginning in 2010 in order to help reach this major milestone, including: the Long-Range Planning Committee, the Citizens’ Advisory Council and the Committee for our Kids’ Future.
