• Poplar Bluff Junior and Senior High students were recently awarded bank cards for leading their respective classes in the Charlie Classic Reading challenge. In addition to earning the Charlie Classics scholarship, Ben Soeter of the PBHS Class of 2015 placed first as a senior, reading 25 books; outgoing junior Christian Cmehil-Warn placed first in his class with 21 books while classmate Nikkia Hickman placed second with 17 books; outgoing sophomore Jordan Cox placed first in his class with 20 books while classmate Shishanna Roberson placed second with 10 books; and outgoing freshman Kenneth Hadley placed first with 12 books.   • More than 60 community members attended the groundbreaking for the Poplar Bluff Middle School on Tuesday, June 2, at the current Senior High campus. Supporters in attendance included the Board of Education, R-I administration, the Greater Poplar Bluff Chamber of Commerce, project officials, state and municipal representatives, business leaders, parents and a very special guest, student Sophie Starnes of O’Neal Elementary, who will be a fifth grader when the new Middle School opens for the 2016/17 school year. “This milestone marks the culmination of more than three years of input from several dozen community leaders, school officials and professional planners to determine the best plan to improve the safety of students for generations to come and get ahead of

  •   Outgoing fourth grader Toby Robertson of Lake Road Elementary School was recently awarded a new acoustic guitar with accessories and a free guitar lesson courtesy of Hays The Music Store and the Dr. Williams School of Music. Lake Road parent Danny Williams, who works at Hays and teaches the guitar lessons, initiated the giveaway, and music teacher Craig Hamilton and Guitar Club leader Ashley Pryor selected the aspiring musician.

  • It’s not every day that a country music legend pulls into town. But that will be the case on June 6 when country music legend Narvel Felts performs at Poplar Bluff’s Historic Rodgers Theatre. It won’t be the first time, though, notes Penny Cooley, manager of the theatre. “He has played at the Rodgers several times now, and it is always great because he has such a loyal fan base. They come from all over the country to come see him, and certainly from all over Missouri.” Felts is a country music legend, but he is also a regional home town guy.   • Poplar Bluff Junior High School students in communication arts teacher Anita Frey’s teen leadership elective put on presentations for their families on Wednesday, May 13, in the gymnasium, demonstrating their individual growth by covering such topics as stereotypes, social media, self-esteem and forgiveness. The new semester-long class as of this past school year is a product of Capturing Kids’ Hearts developed by The Flippen Group, a cultural initiative the R-I district subscribes to. Following the program, students delivered ‘thank you’ letters to their parents. An estimated 250 people were in attendance.
