  • A total of 22 members of Poplar Bluff Schools’ staff, faculty and administration were honored during a retirement reception on Thursday, April 30, in the Administrative Building. Administrators reflected on the careers of the employees and presented them each a plaque as a small token of appreciation for their years of dedicated service to public education. Families, friends, co-workers and school board members were in attendance.

  • Poplar Bluff High School senior Zain Siddiqui was awarded the $1,000 Michael D. Laseter Memorial Scholarship, which is limited to a senior planning to major in the medical field. Siddiqui, 18, has been accepted into the pre-med program at Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Laseter was a physician specializing in internal medicine at Kneibert Clinic for over 20 years. After retiring from medicine in 1994, he taught physiology at PBHS on a voluntary basis for five years. Since 2008, the memorial scholarship in his name has been awarded to a student each year.

  • Poplar Bluff High School senior Lydia Keller has been awarded $2,300 in scholarships for her achievements both in and outside of the classroom. Keller, 18, received the Mary Lynn Wolpers Scholarship, which was established in 2007 for graduating seniors. She also received the Poplar Bluff School Foundation Scholarship reserved for a past or present graduate planning to become a teacher. Keller will study early childhood education at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro.

  • Melody Melloy is determined that Sarah White will never be forgotten. The UCAN (United Cancer Assistance Network) of Southeast Missouri organizer is already well under way in planning the Fourth Annual UCAN Walk to honor White’s courageous battle against cancer, and to tell every cancer patient that they are not alone in their fight. “Last year we raised over $30,000 at the Sarah White event, and all of it stayed in Butler, Stoddard, and Wayne Counties,” said Melloy. She says already, over 700 people have signed up to take part in this year’s event. This year’s event is scheduled for May 23. But Melloy believes there will be many more. “I anticipate more like 2,000 people taking part,” said the
