• This morning I received a call from a foreign accented man stating I'd won the Publisher's Clearinghouse Sweepstakes for $850k and 2014 Red Mercedes Benz with All-State insurance paid. I did fill out a Publishers Clearinghouse sweepstakes last year so in the back of my mind the entire time was...well, I guess it could happen. Certainly I hoped it were true, but I figured it was a prank call or a scam so I hit the record button on my phone system. The caller was very good at his job never asking for personal information and providing immense amounts of details and information. Different people have their "gullibility" point and the caller's script made sure to cover most of the bases.

  • THE FOLLOWING IS THE OPINION OF BRIAN BECKER: Our three candidates for City Council (Jack Rushin, David Johnson and Peter Tinsley) need donations to aid them in this last month of the campaign. Please consider helping with a credit card or paypal donation (links are below). This email is going to almost 2000 people. If each were to give a couple of dollars we'd have all we need. Now's the time to get involved and help us make a difference. Don't live in Poplar Bluff? Then your donation is even more important since you cannot vote on election day, you can at least help get the message out. BACKGROUND Many people can attest that Poplar Bluff has always been controlled

  • Our community lost a dear friend over the weekend. Everyone who came near Mazie Hyland was impacted by her bigger-than-life presence. Ms. Mazie, as she was called by many of her friends, was originally from Corning Arkansas. She and her husband, Howard, moved to Poplar Bluff from California in 1983. This lady was no shrinking violet. She was “the boss” for an oil company she worked for in Bakersfield before returning to the area to help care for her elderly parents. She is fondly remembered by many as “the boss” wherever she worked or volunteered. Her personality was large, her heart was kind, and she walked into your life with every conversation. Most recently, she volunteered at Physician’s Park Primary

  • Back in June, 2010, when I sat down to discuss Open Access with the Municipal Utilities Advisory Board, I sat across the table from three Board members of Southern Bank, one executive officer of First Midwest Bank, and one executive officer of Commerce Bank. It made me wonder why this board was dominated by one industry. One friend told me it was because of how much cash flows through MU/City Cable. Another source told me that at least one local bank paid a bonus to their executive officers if appointed to Municipal Utilities Advisory Board (MUAB). Let me make a couple of things extremely clear: I'm not accusing any banks or bankers of wrong-doing I believe banks are extremely important
